Free SHS will not be canceled – Mahama assures Ghanaians

President Mahama Affirms Commitment to Strengthening Free SHS Policy.

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, assuring Ghanaians that the initiative will not be abolished but rather enhanced to improve its effectiveness and long-term sustainability.

Delivering the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, February 27, 2025, President Mahama emphasized the program’s critical role in promoting educational access and equity.

He pledged to refine its implementation to ensure it meets the evolving needs of Ghanaian students.

"I, John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, will not cancel the Free SHS programme," he asserted. "I am committed to strengthening and improving its implementation for the benefit of all."

The Free SHS initiative, introduced to provide free secondary education to all Ghanaian students irrespective of their socio-economic backgrounds, has been the subject of both commendation and critique.

President Mahama highlighted the program’s tangible impact, disclosing that approximately 3.4 million students have benefited since its inception.

He challenged the previous administration’s claim that 5.1 million students had been reached, describing the figure as "an inflated and misleading narrative intended to gain political advantage."

His remarks underscore his administration’s priority to address existing inefficiencies within the Free SHS policy while enhancing its operational framework.

President Mahama assured the nation of his unwavering dedication to ensuring that every Ghanaian child has access to quality secondary education, emphasizing that the program will be refined to maximize its long-term benefits.
