Mahama: Reintroduction of PTAs Will Not Financially Burden Parents
SONA: Reintroduction of PTAs won’t burden parents – Mahama
The government has pledged to ease concerns about the return of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) in public schools, assuring that the move will not place heavy financial demands on parents.
President John Dramani Mahama, speaking during his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) of his second term on Thursday, February 27, confirmed that the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) will regulate PTA operations to prevent excessive fees.
“In line with our promise, the Minister for Education has announced the restoration of Parent-Teacher Associations in the management of schools.
It is vital for parents and the community to be involved in school administration. However, measures will be taken to ensure that no family faces undue financial pressure as a result,” President Mahama stated.
The reintroduction of PTAs, announced by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, is intended to promote better collaboration between parents and educators, ultimately improving student outcomes.
President Mahama also addressed the challenges posed by the double-track system in senior high schools, describing it as a major concern.
He reaffirmed the government's commitment to eliminating the system by accelerating infrastructure development and completing outstanding educational projects.
“To fund these efforts, the Education and Finance Ministries are working to uncap the GETFund, ensuring that resources are available to expand school facilities,” he added.
The government’s approach reflects a broader agenda to strengthen educational governance while alleviating the financial burden on families and improving learning conditions nationwide.
