President Mahama to Deliver First State of the Nation Address Today

President John Dramani Mahama will deliver his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) today, Thursday, February 27, before Parliament. This address is expected to outline his administration’s priorities, focusing on economic recovery, job creation, and fostering national unity.

With rising inflation, increasing living costs, and concerns about wage inequality, many Ghanaians are eager to hear Mahama’s plans for stabilizing the economy. Business leaders, labor unions, and political analysts are closely monitoring the speech, particularly for details on the government’s "resetting agenda"β€”a comprehensive strategy aimed at revitalizing key sectors of the economy.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has been vocal about its expectations for the address. TUC Chairman Bernard Owusu, speaking to Channel One TV, stressed the need for clear and practical solutions. "We expect specific measures on how the government plans to reset the economy. Many Ghanaians are struggling, and we need concrete steps to address these challenges," he stated.

The TUC is also advocating for a shift from the current minimum wage system to a living wage model that ensures fair compensation across all sectors. Additionally, there is a strong call for policies that promote job creation, especially for young people, and for reforms that enhance pension coverage and improve retirement benefits for informal sector workers.

Beyond economic concerns, Mahama’s address is expected to touch on national cohesion. Civil society organizations and labor groups are urging the administration to adopt inclusive governance practices and work toward reducing political polarization. Owusu emphasized the importance of moving beyond partisanship, urging the government to foster unity and collaboration.

The speech is seen as a defining moment for Mahama’s presidency. It will not only outline his policy vision but also signal his approach to addressing Ghana’s pressing challenges and building consensus across political and social divides.

As Ghanaians await the address, expectations are high for a clear and actionable roadmap that delivers meaningful change.
