COP Yohunu replaces COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare as Inspector-General of Police
President Mahama Appoints COP Yohunu as Inspector-General of Police.
President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP). This appointment was made in consultation with the Council of State and in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution, which outline the process for selecting the head of the Ghana Police Service.
COP Yohunu takes over from COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who previously served as the Inspector-General of Police. With a distinguished career spanning four decades, COP Yohunu brings a wealth of experience and deep institutional knowledge to his new role. His appointment signals the government’s commitment to enhancing security, improving public safety, and advancing comprehensive reforms within the Ghana Police Service.
Throughout his forty years of service, COP Yohunu has held various key positions within the police administration, equipping him with the expertise to lead the force effectively.
He is expected to spearhead initiatives aimed at modernizing the police service, strengthening operational efficiency, and fostering greater public trust in law enforcement. His leadership will also focus on addressing emerging security challenges and improving the welfare and professional development of police personnel.
Announcing the appointment, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Spokesperson to the President, who also serves as the Minister for Government Communications, emphasized the administration’s confidence in COP Yohunu’s ability to provide strategic leadership and drive positive change within the police service.
As the new Inspector-General of Police, COP Yohunu is tasked with leading the Ghana Police Service into a new era of modernization and transformation, ensuring that the institution remains responsive, professional, and dedicated to maintaining law and order across the country.
