Eduwatch Criticizes GH¢203 Million Teacher Trainee Allowance as Wasteful Expenditure.
The Executive Director of Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch), Mr. Kofi Asare, has expressed strong reservations regarding the government's decision to allocate GH¢203 million for teacher trainee allowances in the 2025 budget.
In an interview with Accra-based Citi FM's Eyewitness News, following the presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to Parliament, Mr. Asare described the allocation as an unproductive use of public funds.
Mr. Asare emphasized the need for the government to reassess its priorities regarding educational financing, citing concerns about the policy's impact on the efficient allocation of educational resources.
He stated, "I do not believe that spending over GH¢200 million on teacher trainee allowances is transformative. It is a wasteful expenditure, and we urge the government to shift away from this approach."
During the budget presentation on March 11, 2025, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson revealed that the government had earmarked GH¢203 million for teacher trainee allowances and GH¢480 million for nursing trainee allowances.
This allocation has sparked concerns among stakeholders, who question the effectiveness of the current system.
Eduwatch, a renowned organization dedicated to promoting transparency and accountability in education policy and resource management, has consistently advocated for measures that ensure better outcomes through more efficient use of public funds.
The organization has suggested alternative support mechanisms, such as enhanced student loan schemes, to address the needs of teacher trainees.
In light of these concerns, Eduwatch has called on the government to reconsider its approach to educational financing, prioritizing initiatives that yield tangible results and promote sustainable development in the education sector.
