Enhancing ldentity Verification Standards for Secure Transactions

Enhancing ldentity Verification Standards for Secure Transactions.

The National Identification Authority (NIA) is emphasizing the importance of biometric verification for secure transactions in Ghana, as part of their efforts to enhance the security and integrity of identity verification across all public and private institutions.

The NIA has noted that some institutions are relying on non-biometric identity verification services, such as lookup lists and visual inspection of the Ghana Card, which do not guarantee the accuracy of an individual's identity as recorded in the National Identity Register (NIR).

Benefits of Biometric Verification.

The use of biometric verification is crucial in preventing identity theft and impersonation, eliminating reliance on easily forged physical documents, ensuring real-time verification with records of persons stored in the National Identity Register, and supporting national and international security standards. Specifically, the benefits of biometric verification include:

•Preventing identity theft and impersonation

•Eliminating reliance on easily forged physical documents

•Ensuring real-time verification with records of persons stored in the National Identity Register

•Supporting national and international security standards

Risks of Non-Biometric Verification Methods.

In contrast, non-biometric verification methods pose significant risks, including:

•Lists may not reflect real-time updates (e.g., lost, stolen, or revoked IDs or updated personal information)

•Visual inspection alone cannot detect fraudulent or tampered Ghana Cards

•Institutions may unknowingly facilitate identity fraud or misuse

NIA's Solution and Support

To address these concerns, the NIA has established a robust Identity Verification System Platform (IVSP) that enables biometric verification of individuals with Ghana Cards against the National Identity Register.

This platform ensures accurate, secure, and auditable output data, providing institutions with a reliable means of verifying identities.

The NIA is available to provide technical guidance and support for institutions to upgrade their verification processes and ensure secure and reliable biometric identity verification for all.

Institutions can download request forms for identity verification services on the NIA website ((link unavailable)).
