GHS31 Billion Approved for Ministry of Education Budget

Parliament Approves GHS31 Billion Education Budget for 2025.

Ghana's Parliament has given the green light to a GHS31 billion budget for the Ministry of Education in 2025.

This funding will support key educational initiatives, including the "No Fee Stress" program, which aims to ease financial pressures for first-year students in public tertiary institutions.

Additionally, the government will provide free tertiary education for persons with disabilities, a move designed to reduce the financial strain on families.

As part of efforts to improve teachers’ welfare, the Ministry plans to build 100 accommodation units for basic school teachers under the "Teacher Dabrɛ Initiative."

During the budget presentation on March 11, 2025, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson disclosed that GHS3.5 billion has been allocated to the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining and enhancing the policy, emphasizing its role in expanding access to secondary education.

“This funding will ensure that no Ghanaian child is left behind while addressing long-standing infrastructure deficits in our secondary schools,” he assured Parliament.

To further strengthen the education sector, the government has also lifted the cap on the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).

This decision will channel additional resources toward:

  • Expanding classroom and dormitory facilities in overcrowded schools.
  • Supplying teaching and learning materials.
  • Enhancing teacher recruitment and training to improve education quality.

With these initiatives, the government aims to address infrastructure challenges and create a more inclusive and well-equipped educational system.
