Government to Abolish Double-Track System and Extend Free SHS Policy to Private Schools – Haruna Iddrisu.
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed the government’s intention to make substantial adjustments to the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.
These changes include eliminating the double-track system and extending the policy’s coverage to private senior high schools.
Speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning Show, Mr. Iddrisu explained that the expansion aims to increase access to secondary education.
He disclosed that the government will use the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) to place 150,000 students in private senior high schools alongside those in public institutions.
"We have decided to expand Free SHS to include private schools in Ghana," he announced. "This will allow an additional 150,000 students to be placed in private senior high schools through the placement system."
The Minister also indicated that the government is working toward ending the double-track system within the next two to three years. Achieving this objective, he noted, will require significant investment in educational infrastructure.
"Our aim is to phase out the double-track system entirely, but this will depend on substantial infrastructure development," Mr. Iddrisu emphasized.
In addition to these reforms, the Minister revealed the government’s ambition to extend the Free SHS initiative beyond secondary education to the tertiary level.
