Haruna Launches Committee to Oversee Transition to Single-Track System

A committee set up to end Double-Track system
Education Ministry Sets Up Committee to End Double-Track System.

A newly inaugurated committee, led by the Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has been tasked with transitioning Senior High Schools (SHS) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHSTS) from the double-track system to a single-track model.

The committee's primary objective is to provide expert recommendations and strategic direction for phasing out the double-track system.

This system was introduced under the Nana Addo administration to address the surge in student enrollment following the rapid implementation of the Free SHS policy.

To achieve its goal, the committee will conduct a thorough review of the 2024/2025 academic calendar, ensure that the WASSCE timetable aligns with other West African countries, and design a comprehensive roadmap for returning to a single-track system.

This initiative is in line with the campaign pledge of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and President John Mahama, who committed to abolishing the double-track system upon assuming office after the 2024 elections.

In fulfillment of this promise, an 11-member committee has been formed, with Prof. Peter Grant of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) as the chairperson. The members include representatives from key educational institutions:

Dr. Munawaru Issahaque – Deputy Director-General (Quality and Access), GES

•Prof. Smile Gavua Dzisi (Mrs.) – Deputy Director-General (Management Service), GES

•Prince Charles Agyemang-Duah – Schools & Instructions Division, GES

•Mr. David Odjidja – CHASS

•Addo Nicholas Nii Kpakpoe – COHBS

•D. W. Agbenyo – WAEC

•Rosemond Wilson (PhD) – WAEC

•Mr. Augustus Agyemfra – CODE

•Prof. Samuel A. Atintono – PRINCOF

•Prof. Godwin Awabil – University of Cape Coast (UCC)

•Prof. Peter Grant (Chairperson) – University of Cape Coast (UCC)

As part of its duties, the committee will refine the academic calendar for the next school year, synchronize the WASSCE schedule with that of other West African nations, and outline a clear strategy for eliminating the double-track system.

In a related development, the reopening date for students in single-track schools has been pushed back from March 30, 2025, to April 23, 2025, signaling the first steps in implementing these educational reforms.
