Foreign-Language Studies to Become Mandatory for SHS 2 Students by End of 2025 – Education Minister.

In a landmark declaration, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu revealed that second-year Senior High School (SHS) students will be required to undertake foreign language studies as an integral component of their academic curriculum by the close of 2025. This pioneering initiative forms a cornerstone of President John Dramani Mahama's far-reaching educational reforms, designed to enhance the global competitiveness of Ghanaian students and equip them with the linguistic proficiency and cultural acumen necessary to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

Under this visionary plan, students will have the opportunity to select from a diverse array of international languages, including French, Spanish, German, Chinese, and others, tailored to their academic pursuits and future aspirations. The study of a foreign language will be a compulsory complement to their field of study, thereby fostering a more holistic and globally oriented education.

Addressing attendees at the launch of the Free Sanitary Pads Programme on April 24, Minister Iddrisu emphasized that this initiative is part of a comprehensive overhaul of the curriculum, aimed at cultivating a new generation of Ghanaian students who are not only academically accomplished but also linguistically adept and culturally savvy. According to him, every SHS 2 student will undertake the study of one major foreign language as a mandatory component of their academic program.

Moreover, the Minister disclosed that the curriculum reforms would extend to the basic education sector, with a particular focus on integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education into the learning experience of Upper Primary students. Specifically, Primary Four to Six learners will be exposed to STEM education through the deployment of STEM kits and STEM cells, designed to cultivate early interest and proficiency in these critical disciplines.

The Minister underscored the government's unwavering commitment to enriching the quality, relevance, and international competitiveness of education in Ghana, highlighting the pivotal role that President Mahama is playing in spearheading these transformative initiatives. The Ghana Education Trust Fund is actively securing the necessary resources to support this endeavor, ensuring that the reforms are implemented effectively and sustainably.

These groundbreaking interventions underscore the government's dedication to providing Ghanaian students with a world-class education that prepares them for success in an increasingly globalized and technologically driven world.
